In a significant step for the sports movement in Europe, TAFISA and a consortium of leading organizations from the European Sport Movement have expressed their gratitude to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen for including "Sport" in the title of the new Commissioner responsible for the sector. This move highlights the importance of sports and physical activity in European policy and aligns with the EU’s commitment to improving health, fostering inclusion, and driving economic growth through sport.
The letter, endorsed by ENGSO - European Non-Governmental Sports Organisation, EUSA - European University Sports Association, TAFISA -The Association For International Sport for All, EAS - European Athlete as Student Network, ENSE - European Network of Sport Education, EGLSF - European Gay & Lesbian Sport Federation and ICSSPE - International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education, emphasizes the cross-sectoral role of sport in boosting physical and mental health, strengthening economies, enhancing tourism, and promoting equality. We believe this recognition will catalyze the development of an EU-wide strategy on sport, underscoring its importance in the continent’s sustainable future.
The inclusion of sport in the Commissioner’s title also signals a commitment to prioritizing preventive health and mental well-being and fostering European values through sport. We pledge their support to this initiative, confident that this breakthrough will lead to a stronger, more united Europe through sport.
