On 19-20 November, CONADER successfully held the third edition of its national Active Cities conference in Guatemala City. Bringing together close to 100 guests ranging from mayors and representatives of municipalities to international speakers, the event provided an inspiring platform for sharing examples, good practices, and innovative perspectives to develop active cities approaches across the country.
Showcasing how communities can embed physical activity as part of their daily life within the city, BiciRuta 502 organized a friendly bike tour throughout the streets of the city, allowing participants to enjoy the sights and connect with the various districts in a fun and safe way. Despite roads in the city sometimes being congested and not always being bike-friendly, the tour provided a great example of how an initiative can create a safe and fun environment for physical activity in challenging circumstances.

CONADER President Lic. Sergio Cifuentes Chete opened the Conference with remarks on the importance of promoting physical activity for health and wellbeing. International speakers followed suit and shared their expertise on topics ranging from health to active ageing and physical literacy. TAFISA Head of Operations Gaëtan Garcia was invited to share international examples and good practices from active cities worldwide, introducing the work of cities such as Liverpool, Buenos Aires, Hamburg, Richmond, and Ljubljana, among others.
Following the launch of Guatemala's national Active Cities labelling the previous year, CONADER celebrated the work of municipalities and recognized 38 of them across Guatemala as deserving of the national label. Recognized municipalities took the stage to provide a snapshot of their work and initiatives, connecting the philosophy of active cities to their realities and communities.
Congratulations to CONADER and Guatemala for the Conference and their national Active Cities scheme, as well as to the 38 municipalities pioneering the national label.
