TAFISA Attends UNESCO CIGEPS Meeting

Held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for Physical Education and Sport gathered on 15 June representatives from 18 elected UNESCO Member States and Members of the Permanent Consultative Committee, including TAFISA.

UNESCO Director-General Mr Kaled El-Enany kick-started the meeting by addressing the audience. Thereafter, H.E. Mr Gohar Nabil, Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sport, was elected CIGEPS Chair for the remainder of the 2026-27 mandate.

On the agenda this year was the development of UNESCO Global Policy Standards for Inclusive, Equitable and Safe Sport and Physical Education, which are expected to be adopted by world governments at the upcoming MINEPS VIII Summit.

Recognising the need for stronger data to inform policymaking and investment, UNESCO also introduced the 1st Global Sport Policy Survey (GSPS), which started in October 2025 to collect baseline data from national sport authorities on the design, implementation and monitoring of inclusive, equitable and safe sport policies. The survey data will establish regional and global baselines aligned with the Global Policy Standards for Inclusive, Equitable and Safe Sport and PE and Fit for Life thematic priorities and action areas.

UNESCO also announced that the Fit for Life Digital Dashboard is set to be launched. It has been designed to visualise national, regional and global data, enabling policymakers to track progress, compare contexts and identify priority areas for action. This tool will contain findings from UNESCO's sport and physical education surveys, which are translated into practical, accessible insights.

Finally, the meeting served as a platform to release a report titled "Toward Safe Sport: Policy Recommendations from People Impacted by Violence", by UNESCO in partnership with the Sport & Rights Alliance.

The meeting was a good opportunity for the TAFISA Secretary General to meet various UNESCO member states and fellow PCC members, enhancing collaborations.
