The two-day Congress provided a platform for exchanging research, experiences and practical approaches to improving health through sport. Discussions covered topics ranging from healthy ageing and Parkinson's disease to the integration of sport and healthcare, highlighting the contributions of table tennis to physical, mental and social well-being. A particular strength of the Congress was the diversity of perspectives, bringing together scientific evidence, healthcare expertise, lived experiences and community-based approaches.
During the session "Table Tennis for Health: Global Stories, Local Impact", Stacey Kim, Senior Consultant at TAFISA, delivered a presentation titled "Health Through Sport: From Global Frameworks to Local Impact", addressing a key question: How can we ensure that the benefits of sport and physical activity truly reach communities?
Drawing on TAFISA's experience, particularly the Girls Positive and Safe Coaching Pathway, she shared how global ambitions can be translated into local action through capacity building, strong partnerships and locally adapted approaches. The presentation emphasised that increasing participation is only part of the equation. Equally important is creating positive, safe and inclusive environments where people can enjoy sport, benefit from it and remain active over time.
Beyond the Congress sessions, one of the most memorable aspects of the Festival was the opportunity to meet athletes living with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, along with their families, and hear their personal stories. These conversations offered a glimpse into what being part of the table tennis community means to them, not only in terms of physical activity, but also the friendships, connections and sense of belonging it brings.
Connecting with Partners on the Ground
The Festival also offered an opportunity for TAFISA to connect in person with partners involved in the Girls Positive and Safe Coaching Pathway. This included Mayssa, one of the programme's Regional Trainers, as well as Aniketh Mendonca from the Dani Sport Foundation and Dr. Apithai Bumrungpanitarworn the Table Tennis Association of Thailand, who are working with the ITTF Foundation to bring the Pathway to their local communities.
